═══ 1. Display Driver Settings ═══ Resolution Select a resolution from the list of available resolutions in this group. At times, one or more resolutions may be unselectable because the memory requirements of the Resolution/Color combination exceeds the amount of memory available for graphics. To increase the number of resolutions available, you may have to decrease the number of Colors available to display. Higher resolutions provide more desktop space and clearer, sharper-looking text. Lower resolutions provide larger icons, text, and a larger mouse pointer. However, you can adjust the size of the mouse pointer and the size of text without changing resolution via the Mouse Object and the Font Palette located in the System Setup Folder. Colors Select the number of colors to be available at any one time. At times, one or more color depths may be unselectable because the memory requirements of the Resolution/Color combination exceeds the amount of memory available for graphics. To increase the number of colors available, you may have to choose a lower Resolution. 256 color modes allow for a larger desktop when graphics memory is limited. However, 256 color modes also tend to use 'dithering' to approximate colors that do not exist in the default 256 color palette. These modes do not always display 24-bit color bitmaps with accurate colors. 64K and 16M color modes require more graphics memory for the same resolution, but provide a better-looking desktop. Refresh Rate Select one of the available refresh rates from the drop-down list box. The refresh rate indicates the number of times per second that the screen will be repainted. In general, higher refresh rates eliminate the subtle flicker that sometimes appears when you look at a monitor and help reduce eye strain. The refresh rates available are those that are supported by both the graphics adapter and the selected monitor. Upgrading to a higher-quality monitor may increase the number of refresh rates available. Monitor Select your monitor from the list of monitors listed in the drop down list box. If your monitor is DDC compliant, the monitor field will indicate "DDC". A DDC monitor can communicate the exact refresh rates it supports. You may override the DDC monitor type. However, it is strongly recommended that you do not change the monitor if a DDC monitor is detected. Graphics Memory This field indicates how much memory is available for use by your graphics adapter. This total limits the range of Resolution/Color combinations. Use Large Font for Windows Selecting this checkbox informs the Win-OS/2 Full Screen and Win-OS/2 Windows sessions to use the large font resources for Title bars, Menus, etc. If this checkbox is not checked, the Windows sessions will use the small font resources. Workplace Shell Palette Aware Select the Workplace Shell Palette Aware check box to improve the appearance of most bit maps that are displayed as the background of the Desktop or other folders. When this check box is selected, most bit maps are displayed at their optimal levels. However, because of the capabilities of some applications, the appearance of some bit maps is improved when this check box is not selected. Test It is important to test the display any time one or more settings are changed. Testing is provided to prevent you from setting the mode to a Resolution/Color/Refresh Rate combination that your monitor cannot handle. Without testing, you could damage your monitor by exceeding its refresh rate capabilities. If you are unsure of your monitor's capabilities, consult your Owner's Manual. When testing the new settings, two scenarios are possible: If only a change in the refresh rate is desired, the system will change the refresh rate for the current screen and display a dialog box asking if you want to accept the settings or not. If you select Yes, the refresh rate will be updated. If you select No, the old refresh rate will be restored. If you do nothing, after 15 seconds, the old refresh rate will be restored. If you change settings other than the refresh rate, the system will switch to a full-screen session and display a test pattern using the new Resolution/Colors/Refresh Rate combination. You can return by pressing a key at any time or if you do nothing, the screen will automatically be restored after 15 seconds. After returning, a dialog box will ask if you want to accept the settings or not. If you select Yes, the settings will be updated. If you select No, the old settings will be restored. You cannot change the display settings and close the System Notebook without first testing the new mode. If you attempt to do this, all changes will be lost and a dialog box to that effect will be displayed.
